Frequently, affected facilities employ methods that focus either on changing out the water in their plumbing system (e.g. ‘flushing’), dramatically increasing the level of oxidant-based chemical disinfectant in the system (e.g. hyperchlorination), or both. Research has shown this approach can be effective at reducing legionella positivity in the near term. At the same time, these methods may interrupt building water service, and are known to corrode the pipes within the hospital’s water system. This creates a costly tradeoff for healthcare facilities by damaging patient and employee satisfaction, enterprise reputation, and occupancy rates, as well as essential plumbing infrastructure. In addition, this approach commonly results in rapid bacterial recurrence, often in sixty days or less. This, in turn, can lead to an ongoing cycle of remediation and recurrence that is expensive, time-consuming, and fails to effectively address root causes like biofilm. &nbsp;This session will discuss how copper-silver ionization has been shown to deliver faster, longer-lasting remediation than oxidant-based chemicals. While many firestop solutions are code-compliant at the time of installation, inevitably some are deficient from the start. &nbsp;Frequent service changes, cable additions, and renovations can compromise barrier performance, often shifting compliance risks and costs from capital construction expenditures (CapEx) to ongoing operational expenditures (OpEx). This course explores fire-rated barrier design and construction strategies that support continuous compliance throughout a facility’s lifecycle. Attendees will examine how traditional field-applied firestop materials can become vulnerable to degradation, re-entry, and inconsistent maintenance, and how alternative fire-rated pathway devices, building joint gasketing systems, and cast-in solutions can help reduce long-term risk, labor, and disruption.
